Sweet Memory

my dear friend,

Last weekend I visited a nice museum in Jakarta Kota, the Puppet or Wayang Museum which located around the Taman Fatahillah or near the Museum Sejarah (Fatahillah).

Amazing the wayang collections (a javanese art)...there exhibits also other countries puppets or wayang such as from europe, thailand...

In that museum , we will see also a cemetery of the well known Jan Pieterszoon Coen. There also exhibits some traditional mask..but will post in other album..

After visited that museum wayang, we stop a while in Museum Sejarah Jakarta and saw a nice performance of a marching band...

Great album of this wayang museum Janine. The puppets by itself are peaces of art which become alive when they are used by the puppet player to perform his show and telling the audience the legends in which you can find a moral or happening from the past. Have you ever attended a wayang puppet performance Janine? I still remember the one I attended long time ago in Jogjakarta.

Oh nice you have a good interest in puppet show Dick, thanks for your nice comment....you are right the puppet its an manisfestation of human life...so not only a doll..its like an alive book story...well, I used to saw the wayang performance once or two times in Jogyakarta too and also long time ago...not so much interest with that kind of art because we already excited with the metropolitan art...so sad ya...but I used also to saw some puppet show in europe may be in French and Holland or London, the street puppet....all cute for children...have you been seen puppet show in Holland?

There is a famous puppet show in Holland where Jan Klaassen and his wife Katrien are the main players. This is all for children Janine. This puppet show can be found in other countries of Europe as well but then the characters have different names. In France Jan Klaassen is called Polichinelle.

Thanks for your answer Dick and nice image...I remember when in Europe saw street puppet show but forget where was that...so in Holland there is also a well known show of that ya, may be i saw in holland too...nice to know that...well, in the museum wayang there are puppets gave by former French President Mitterrand (pict.3264) and also the box for play puppet (3265). Btw, the image you share here I think an old painting or condition in French ya...French peoples very artistic therefore also well known with the Moulin rouge show...oooh very nice performance...I like that..

Oh .. I learn something today, Thank you. In France, we use to say : "le secret de polichinelle" for saying an "open secret" :)) which refers to something which is widely known to be true, but which none of the people is willing to categorically acknowledge in public. Well, like the puppets, wayang and guignols, they are often used for caricature, and comedie-politique.

The most famous marionettes in France name Guignol from Lyon. Perhaps it is like " Si unyil" in Indonesia.

Nice visit you did Janine and thank you for sharing. why don't you put some caption in every types of wayang? Bcs, I believe there are so many origine places from Indonesia? marionettes from java, sumatra etc ...

So nice to see all your explanation and pictures about puppet in french Upi, thanks so much ya...well, in the museum there is also the Guignoz puppet box as shown in one of the pictures, its a gift from Mitterrand..

Well, I think art such as perfomance always using also as a social control...so they make the stories always related with the community real life issue...is a conventional media communication of peoples especially from the root community to attract attention government or certain party , the same like people voice....I know it also been done in wayang, especially in the orde baru era, government using wayang to campaign their program such as keluarga berencana...but I think that good communication strategy, therefore that program was success...Unyil also used as a social and politic campaign or propaganda..now indonesia not using that traditional performance so active like before...now there is no Unyil or other modern puppet...people has been hypnotised with the hi-techonology informations such as the cyber...ha ha ha...or other communication tools which are more personal or customized with lots of features (selular phone, digital video, camera, ipod....) now is the era of IT...

Oh yes Upi thanks for your advice...I realize that too, but you know lah some time a little lazy...besides, I was not wrotedown the informations/captions which put in each puppet box...take time to do that...but if I come there again, of course, I will write down the caption...however, I will try to write the caption for certains pictures here which i remember...so far i know wayang in indonesia, mostly are from java (west, east and central), there is no from sumatera....may be wrong , may be true....I have to check again....

This image is NOT French Janine; look at the flag. Horizontal Red-White-Blue is the Dutch flag while the French flag has the same colors but vertical.
helga134 wrote on Mar 3
Oh yes Dick....thanks for the correction..nice ja to see the old painting...I think at that time Dutch people quite famous with the
French people...not only in art but also in politic...

There has been a time that the French ruled over Holland but that was more the 250 years ago. Now we live in harmony with all other countries in Europe.

Thanks Dick for your further explanation which really nice to know including the beautiful painting here..ya, european countries now already a very well growing or establish nation...thats the human life process...already in harmony phase....lucky for you who come from that country...
